Castro Kapela

Castro has been the Director of AA Tanzania for over ten years now and is well known and respected in Moshi. From Zulu descent, his infectious laugh and calm manner has been a big help to many hundreds of our clients over the years. He also understands the company ethos of looking after the staff well and is a popular employer in the town. With our support he is able to pay excellent salaries, provide training in first aid and altitude, and ensure that everyone is happy in their job.

Castro was once a porter himself when Gavin first met him, he set up the company with our injection of capital support. He now has a guesthouse in the town and has made a good living from the mountain. He has also been to Ireland several times on travel shows and has expanded his operations to our school trips on the slopes of the mountain.

Kamander Kisamu

Kamander has worked with Adventure Alternative Tanzania since it's inception many years ago and alongside Lipman Mtui he guides all of our Kilimanjaro climbs.

Kamander is a popular member of our team and works on all our climbs of Kilimanjaro, Mt Meru and also with all our university and school groups. He lives close to the village of Marangu and is also involved with the projects our charity, Moving Mountains also undertakes in the region.

As a young man Kamander worked hard on the mountain initially as a porter, before climbing the ranks to a guide. He has climbed the mountain hundreds of times and is an excellent guide who really looks after you as if you were his own son or daughter. He's a funny guy and whether in a snow storm on Kilimanjaro or running a school camp in the Tanzanian heat he'll manage everything smoothly, safely and with humour.
