Mount Kenya Chogoria Route
This east to west traverse of Mount Kenya combines an ascent on the impressive Chogoria route to Point Lenana with a descent of either the Naro Moru or Sirimon route on the western side of the mountain.
Overview
This 5 day / 4 night, 50+ kilometre trek on Mount Kenya ascends the spectacular Chogoria route to Point Lenana (4,985m) and descends either the Naro Moru or Sirimon route on the descent, although our preference is the Naro Moru route as there is an enjoyable descent from the summit to the Austrian Hut using the via ferrata in place along the side of the ridge.
The ascent using the Chogoria route, generally considered to be the most scenic of routes with spectacular landscape and geological features of cliffs, cirques and lakes, is longer with only basic facilities past Meru Banda’s but the gradual approach make it a great route for safe acclimatisation. From Chogoria town we’ll take 4×4’s up to the bamboo forest and trek to Meru Banda’s where it is possible to spot some wildlife venturing out of the forest to graze on the open grassland. From Meru Banda’s we trek to our second camp at Lake Ellis, via the impressive Nithi Falls and enjoy an evening walk up to the top of the nearby Mugi Hill. The next day gives you panoramic views behind of Mugi, Ithanguni and the Giants Billiards Table but ahead there’s even better to come with the Gorges Valley, Lake Michaelson and the vertical cliffs at Mintos camp. An early morning summit for sunrise offers panoramic views all around and on a clear day you can see Kilimanjaro in the distance.
The descent using the Naro Moru route has an enjoyable start as we descend to the Austrian Hut along the side of the ridge from Pont Lenana, using the fixed lines where necessary this section needs some easy scrambling skills. From the Austrian Hut we’ll follow a path to the top of the scree slope which we’ll zig zag down to reach stream fed by the glacier above, then a short walk along a clear path to Mackinders Camp and breakfast. After some R&R we’ll continue down the Naro Moru route, along the Teleki Valley to Picnic Rocks and down the Vertical Bog to reach Met Station for overnight. From Met Station it’s a trek through the forest to reach the Naro Moru National Park Gate where our vehicle will collect us for the transfer back to Naro Moru. It is possible to arrange a descent on the Sirimon route from the summit.
You can read more about the type of terrain you’ll encounter on a Mount Kenya trek and the level of fitness required in ‘Mount Kenya advice’.
The east to west traverse itinerary starts in Chogoria town and finishes in Naro Moru town but we can provide all the optional extras if needed, including private transport from Nairobi and back again after the trek, upgrades to hut accommodation on the mountain, accommodation in Nairobi, Chogoria or Embu (town near Chogoria where we run a number of charitable projects) and Naro Moru or Nanyuki, etc. We can also help you with a tailor made safari or a visit to our Moving Mountains projects either before the climb in Embu or after the climb in Naro Moru.
What Our Adventurers Think:
Firstly I would like to say a huge thank you for helping to organise a fantastic trip to Mount Kenya! It really was an unforgettable trip and we all hugely enjoyed it!
The organisation of the whole trip was faultless and I was so impressed with everyone I have met here from AA. Cyrus was fantastic and we couldn’t have asked for a better guide, along with the brilliant team of porters, not forgetting the fantastic cook. He fed us very very well!
Mount Kenya 'East to West' Traverse Itinerary
You are welcome to adjust the itinerary and add nights in Nairobi, Embu or Naro Moru, please do talk to us directly to discuss options. Ol Pejeta Conservancy is very close to Naro Moru and is a great location for an optional add-on safari, both for day trips and over-nights. It is probably the only place in Kenya (aside from Masai Mara) where you have a chance of seeing the ‘Big 5’ in one day. It is also the only place in East Africa where you can see chimpanzee and the only place to see the remaining ‘northern white rhino’ and we can offer luxury safari options in one of the numerous lodges within the Conservancy or wild camping / budget options too.
You can visit some of our Moving Mountains projects and enjoy some of the sights that both locations offer, longer tailor-made safari’s, trips to the coast or even the opportunity to sponsor a former street child or beneficiary of Moving Mountains to join you on the trek!
4×4 transfer from Chogoria with our Guide, Porters and Cooks up through the forest to the end of the 4×4 trail and trek through the remaining bamboo forest to Meru Banda’s (2,950m) where we’ll set up camp. Today is a 3-4 hour trek depending on how far the 4×4’s take us.
Todays trek takes you across marshlands and over mountain streams as we trek to Lake Ellis (3,455m) via the impressive Nithi Falls (roughly 9km / 3 – 4 hours). Our camp is just above Lake Ellis where you can enjoy views of Mugi Hill, the Giants Billiard Table and Ithanguni. An evening walk up to nearby Mugi Hill (3,541m) is a nice way to finish the day off, this also helps with the acclimatisation process.
Today is a stunning trek that takes you up along the ridge overlooking the Gorges Valley until Lake Michelson comes in to view, from here we continue on a gentle traverse to Lake Michaelson (4,100m) where the terrain becomes more alpine with sparse vegetation, Mintos campsite is perched on a high ridge which offers spectacular views of the peaks above and the valleys below. It’s an ideal place for acclimatisation before the summit.
We’ll start our ascent between 2am and 3am to allow us to reach Lenana Peak at 4985 meters in time for sunrise (roughly 6.30am). On a really clear day you can see Kilimanjaro, like a sky island floating in the mist over 200 miles away. Our descent along the side of the summit ridge using the via ferrata where necessary takes us down to the Austrian Hut before descending the scree slope to reach Mackinders Campsite (4200m) for breakfast / brunch (3 hours) and from here it’s another 5 hours down to Met Station at 3,040m (this is roughly 13-14 hours trekking covering about 22km) and our final night camping on the mountain.
Final trek through the forest to reach the Naro Moru Park Gate to sign out of Mount Kenya National Park and meet your driver for the transfer back to Naro Moru.
