K2 Classic Trek and Concordia, Pakistan

High in Karakorum Range of northern Pakistan, this challenging trek begins and ends in Skardu and over 20 days visits the base camps of both K2 and Broad Peak with a high point of just over 5000 metres.

Overview

After flying from Islamabad to Skardu, the trek cuts through the greatest concentration of some of the highest peaks in the world all the way to Concordia which is a central confluence of three famous glaciers, the Godwin Austin, Baltoro and Abruzzi.

The hike along the Baltoro glacier is the traditional expedition route to K2 and passes by giants such as Trango Towers (6363m), Masherbrum (7821m), Muztagh Tower (7283m), Gasherbrum IV (7925m), K2 (8611m), Broad Peak (8051m) and Chogolisa (7668m). The views from Concordia boast eight of the worlds thirty highest peaks and has been described as the “Throne Room of the Mountain Gods” for its unique 360˚ panorama of mountains and particularly impressive views of K2.

The normal route comes back to Skardu the same way, but there is an option to extend the trip over the Gondogoro La and return to Skardu in a loop, but the hike over the pass is challenging and there are exposed sections on snow and ice which require the use of crampons, ice axe although there is a fixed line to hold onto during the descent into the next valley.

The Karakorum Mountains

Here is a short clip from independent traveller Bilal that perfectly captures the essence and beauty of this region of the Karakorum.

People describe this region as the ‘sublime sanctuary of nature’, but it is not a trek to be undertaken lightly. However the rewards are great, not just for the mountain panoramas but also the tranquil lakes, meandering rivers, tumbling waterfalls and the experience of the modest Balti culture marked with its distinct language, architecture and dress.

K2 Classic Trek map and altitude profile

K2 Classic Trek - what is the terrain like?

Terrain on the trek is on a well trodden most of the way, though this can be rocky and uneven in parts. Higher up, above Broad Peak base camp and on the way to K2 base camp the terrain can go on to the ice, however crampons are not required due to the glacial silt on the ice giving good grip. It is not precipitous and there is no rock climbing or ‘mountaineering’ which requires equipment. It is a walk all the way, although some of the hills can be steep and never-ending! The entire K2 Trek is around 150 kilometres in length and is classed as challenging with multiple days trekking 7 or 8 hours.

Poles are useful, depending on whether you have problems with knees or if you have a personal preference for using them. Higher up, the open slopes and moraine may give you added reassurance with a pole, but again the path is quite easy to follow. It is obviously important to have good equipment and adequately prepared for multi-day walking.

Generally, it can hot during the day (up to 20ºC) and cool in the evening (average 5ºC) with little wind and occasional snow higher up.

    K2 Classic trek accommodation

Whilst in Islamabad and Skardu we use good quality hotels which will provide you with all the services you would expect. The rooms are on a twin sharing basis. There are options for single rooms at a supplemental charge and also budget accommodation or upgrades to high end luxury accommodation if preferred.

Throughout the trek section we camp in fully serviced wilderness campsites. These bases allow a comfortable night in a safe accommodation and are a friendly place to meet many trekkers from around the globe. We camp throughout with two people sharing a tent, unless a single tent is requested (there is a supplemental charge for this option). The campsites have toilets and washing facilities.

What do you need to pack for a K2 Classic trek?

Check out our gear recommendations and also our Trekking Kit List page for information about what gear and clothing we recommend for trekking in the Himalaya and Karakorams..

The basic idea of the clothing you will take is to keep you warm, dry, protected from the sun, able to move comfortably in the mountains and able to be comfortable in the evenings and night.

In Islamabad and also Skardu there are many trekking shops and each one an emporium of new, used, quality and fake equipment all very reasonably priced for rental and buying. You can buy almost anything needed for any trek there, though it is advisable to bring waterproof gear and good fitting, broken in boots from home.

The basic idea of the kit that you need is to keep you warm, dry, protected from the sun / rain / cold so that you are able to move efficiently on the mountains and able to be comfortable in the evenings and night. Consider the basics:

    • EATING/DRINKING – Water bottles & favorite snacks for during the day
    • WASHING & MEDICAL – To allow you to wash and maybe stave off a headache or blister
