BecomingX - Kilimanjaro
Everyone has the capacity to achieve extraordinary things. This unique climb of Kilimanjaro will be the culmination of a professional development journey that will help you challenge your perceived limits and build critical skills. The journey to the roof of Africa will also be supporting the BecomingX Foundation, an organisation focused on helping people around the world to build the confidence and skills to realise their full potential
Overview
At 5,895m (19,341ft), Kilimanjaro stands as the highest freestanding mountain in the world and the tallest peak in Africa (one of the famous ‘seven summits’). Our 10 day itinerary includes 7 days climbing Kilimanjaro via one of three classic routes, providing wonderful views through the forest as we ascend up to the planets highest plateau and the iconic Uhuru Peak. The summit is reached after climbing through the night, and we’ll watch the sun rise over the African plains from the highest point on the continent. This is a tough challenge, but also an achievable and enjoyable one.
Highlights:
- Summit the world’s highest freestanding mountain and one of the Seven Summits (5895m, 19,341 ft)
- Trek through multiple eco-systems on a number of stunning routes like the Machame, Lemosho and Rongai
- Benefit from a unique professional development opportunity, developed by BecomingX and led by two leading experts on adventure and personal challenges
- Fundraise for BecomingX Foundation, the charitable arm focused on helping people in developing countries to realise their full potential
- Extend your trip to go on a safari, or relax in nearby Zanzibar
What Our Adventurers Think:
“In all my years working in different industries and around the world, this was without a doubt the most powerful, life changing experience. It is forever etched in my psyche as a great and unique team achievement”
Becoming X - Kilimanjaro Expeditions
BecomingX and Adventure Alternative have partnered several times before with the Kilimanjaro Expeditions, and in this video some staff from Accenture took the challenge to climb the mountain and to be a part of the team building journey. Here is some of the positive feedback:
“The BecomingX expedition to Kilimanjaro was one of the most formative experiences of my life. The team was extraordinary and I can honestly say this is the best team building event I have ever done. I learned so much about myself and working with others – it was epic from start to finish”
Renee Heath, Senior Manager, Accenture

We depart early in the morning and drive around Kilimanjaro to the North side where the Rongai Gate is. It takes about 3hrs but offers some great views. After registering at the gate for permits and sorting gear for the porters we then walk through the forest for 4hrs to reach Camp 1 at 2800m. We first head to Nale Moru village to start the trek on a path through farmland and pine forest initially to reach the edge of the moorland where Simba Camp is with beautiful views over the Kenyan plains. This is a great day for seeing wildlife.
Today we move out on to the moorland of Kilimanjaro and have a longish day at 6hrs up to Camp 2 which is near Kikelewa Cave at 3600m. Steady ascent up to the Second Cave with superb views of Kibo summit and the Eastern ice fields on the crater rim. Continue across moorland towards Mawenzi Peak. The camp is in a sheltered valley with giant Senecios nearby.
Today we are on open ground which at times can be steep as we make our way up to camp at the Mawenzi Tarn (4330m).
Initial short climb and superb views of the mountain and a few hours to the tarn which is in a cirque directly beneath Mawenzi. Short hike, and rest day in the afternoon. Camp here for two nights.
Today is a rest and acclimatisation day at the tarn. You can relax at camp or go on some walks in area. including a hike up and around Mawenzi. This part of the mountain is beautiful and the views are stunning.
4hrs open ground walking today with amazing views via the Saddle to reach camp near Kibo Hut at 4730m. Crossing the high desert terrain of the saddle between Kibo peak and Mawenzi peak, the final camp is at Kibo campsite beneath the massif itself. Rest in preparation for summit day.
Night-time ascent on rock and scree, with occasional snow, to the crater rim at Gilmans Point (5680m) which takes 5 hours, and then onwards to the summit of Uhuru (5895m) itself, which takes an additional 2 hours. Cold temperatures with wind chill. Descend to Horombo Hut at 3800m, which is on the Marangu Route (total 12 hrs).
We then descend to Marangu Gate, along an easy path back into and through the forest for 4 hours. We then transfer by road from Mweka back to the the hotel in Moshi (where a hot shower awaits!), which only takes half an hour.
Either start our 4 day / 3 night safari or depart for home.

“Just wanted to drop you an email to say a HUGE thank you for the best week I’ve ever had. The entire trip was incredibly well organised from start to finish, and I always felt in such safe, experienced hands. The thought of summit night is still somewhat traumatic, but when I reflect on the week as whole, I feel incredibly proud and SO pleased I took the plunge and booked the trip all those months ago.”
