Overview
Our guesthouse in Kathmandu is used by medical elective students and trekkers alike, and it is also our head office for the company.
Front of the house and back garden, we have our office and base in a comfortable residential area of Kathmandu in the north of the city near the ring road and about 15 minutes from the Tribhuvan Hospital for medical students.
View from the roof of the house shows one of the most famous city temples.
The living room is comfortable with an open dining area and kitchen, TV and wifi.
Upstairs there is central area with desktop computer and sofas, and two bedrooms (one ensuite) and a further two bedrooms on the next level.
Pasang Tendi Sherpa
Pasang Tendi Sherpa is our company director and main mountain leader in Nepal. He has been working with Adventure Alternative since 2005 and has made three climbs of Mount Everest with Gavin.
He lives in Kathmandu with his wife Sarasoti and their two children Jubilee and Elli Dolma, where he manages the company and all the operations of our trips in Nepal. He has climbed many of the famous peaks in the country and is a well known personality at the Tourism Association for Nepal (TAAN).
He has had plenty of experience managing expedition and trekking logistics and is popular with staff, plus he also has a lot of experience climbing in other parts of the world, including Aconcagua in Argentina and Denali in Alaska. His English is excellent and he enjoys travel, being with his family and of course climbing. He regularly visits his home village and is the Treasurer of Moving Mountains Nepal, so tends to spend a lot of time working with the communities to develop the projects and programmes that we fund.
Pasang showed his true colours, both as a Sherpa and as a man, when in 2009 he came to the aid of Gavin during his traverse of Everest without bottled oxygen. Pasang was the only back up for the expedition and carried an emergency supply of oxygen in case anything went wrong. When Gavin took a pulmonary oedema at the Second Step, it was Pasang who came to the rescue and provided the life-saving oxygen and then helped with the difficult descent down the North Face.
Chiring Sherpa
Chiring Sherpa is a top trekking guide, with many years of experience and knowledge to offer groups visiting the Himalayas. His gentle demeanour and attention to everyone is always remembered and appreciated. He has amazing knowledge of the flora and fauna and history of the land, and he is very fit!
Chiring lives in Kathmandu with his wife when he is not working and his children are all grown up and working, testament to his many years of working for their future.
Jangbu Sherpa
Jangbu speaks English, Nepali, Hindi, Tibetan and Sherpa. He is qualified in first aid and mountain emergencies and has been a trekking and climbing guide since 2004. He is younger brother to Pasang Tendi and regularly leads our climbs on Island Peak, Mera Peak and other 6000 metre mountains.
Tsering Sherpa
Coordinator of Adventure Alternative Nepal. Tsering is a graduate in Travel and Tourism Management and helps to manage all our operations in Nepal. Primarily based in Kathmandu, Tsering works in our office in the city and arranges a lot of the logistics for our Medical Electives, treks and climbs in the Himalayas
He will be the main point of contact for arranging the excursions that Adventure Alternative Nepal run and is very friendly, helpful and has excellent English.
Lopsang Sherpa
Lopsang comes from the village of Khari Khola and has made several expeditions to Mount Everest and is a qualified guide in Nepal and is training towards the UIAGM qualification. He is married with one child and speaks excellent English and is very proficient at dealing with clients on high peaks. He is self-effacing and pleasant company, and a safe guide to be travelling with.
Lopsang has passed the following training courses in Nepal:
Basic Mountaineering Course - intended for the mountaineers to equip them with new techniques and methodology on mountaineering and rescue activities.
Advance Mountaineering Course - for the mountaineers who have completed Basic Mountaineering Course and includes advanced techniques and skills.
Aspirant Guide Training - currently on the list for inclusion in this programme which is supervised by the IFMGA.
Pasang Lhamu Sherpa
Pasang Lhamu is an extremely skilled and experienced guide. In 2009 she received her trekking license and has travelled and guided all over Nepal. She is really cheery and fun to spend time with and her favourite treks are to Everest Base Camp and the Upper Mustang. Pasang is also a very good climber and an Everest summiteer having reached the summit in May 2018
