Tour du Mont Blanc

The Tour du  Mont Blanc (TMB) has long been known as one of Europe's most famous treks and a must do for any keen hillwalker.

We offer this trek using the high level variant and in a clockwise direction in nine days, thus making the best use of the wonderful mountain huts and the high paths, avoiding the crowds and hotels in the valleys. Our guides are international mountain leaders and they have had many years of experience running treks in the Alps. We offer a personalised and experienced service and proper preparation beforehand. 

This trek is more for the experienced hiker looking for something a bit harder and more self-sufficient and away from the crowds on a circuit which has really special views and keeps you high above the valley floor. We are only working with small groups and we provide excellent, experienced and friendly guidance along the way, including good local knowledge and French speaking staff. 

We can also arrange a guided climb of Mont Blanc itself after your trek.

Tour du Mont Blanc - fitness

The walks and climbs are moderately demanding with some long days of sustained walking with a pack of around 10 kgs. The effects of altitude will also have an impact. Therefore, you will enjoy the trip all the more if you are in good physical shape having exercised regularly leading up to the trip. You need to be comfortable doing multi-day walking on alpine paths, with some terrain being on snow and loose rock. Using trekking poles can be of great help for balance on loose ground and to take some of the strain off your knees. 

Any pre-existing medical or dental concerns should be checked by your doctor and their nature fully disclosed to your insurer and to ourselves.

The ascents on this trip are not technical climbs and no need to traverse precipitous drops along the way, no rock climbing or specialist equipment is needed although some low-level scrambling, with use of hands as well as feet, may be needed in places. Some places involve crossing wooden bridges and ladders going up to some of the huts.

Airport transfers – there are many companies that will transfer you from GVA direct to the accommodation.

Arrival Date - is the advertised date on the website and the end date for onward travel is also stated so in the case of the 5th September 2017 team you should meet us in Chamonix at the Gite la Tapia on the 5th September and you will leave the same accommodation on the 15th September.

Clothing swap - clean clothes are delivered to an RV enroute in Italy, this includes unwanted items & dirty kit being transported back to Chamonix to pick up on the way home.

Payments

A deposit of £250 is required on booking to secure your place and we ask that the remaining balance (trip price minus the deposit) is paid in full 4 weeks prior to your departure. When you book with us you're given your own secure online account which you can access 24/7. Through this account you can edit your booking, add flight, health, insurance and dietary details and also make interim payments. We make payments as flexible as possible and you can choose, if you wish, to pay a bit off your trip fee whenever it suits you.

Tour de Mt Blanc Kit list

The basic idea of the kit we take is to keep you warm, dry, protected from the sun, able to move efficiently on the trail and able to be comfortable in the evenings and night.
 

  • BAGS - Rucksack of around 50 -70 litres plus a light bag for clean clothes to be brought out halfway. Travel clothes can be left in Chamonix. Make sure your rucksack has a waterproof cover in case of showers.
  • SHELL - Top and bottoms to keep off wind/rain. A goretex jacket and trousers, or equivalent brand of waterproof material, will be fine, but it is does not need to be the heaviest three ply option. 
  • INSULATION - Layered system to keep you warm- body, hands & head. Fleece or light down for evenings and cold mornings. Trekking clothes should include shorts and Tshirts plus long trousers and hiking shirt or top. Have a good sunhat as well as a warm hat and a pair of gloves. 
  • BASE LAYER - Thin layers to wick away sweat and to strip down to and keep the sun off when it gets hot. Thermal leggings are perhaps not necessary on this trip unless you get particularly cold easily, but lightweight trekking tops - long and short sleeved - are very useful. Cotton takes longer to dry but would be fine for the evenings in the huts. 
  • FEET - good quality trekking boots with a high ankle are necessary on this trip and perhaps a pair of flip flops or sandals (the huts do provide hut shoes though). Make sure the boots are worn in if they are all leather. Take several pairs of good quality trekking socks. 
  • DRINKING & EATING - Two water bottles or a platypus for keeping hydrated on the trail plus some energy snacks. The huts all supply meals and drinks plus packed lunches for walkers. 
  • WASHING & MEDICAL - wash kit and small personal first aid kit for standard issues like headaches, dehydration, blisters and scrapes. Don't forget your E111 card if European, and also your travel insurance papers since medical care and medications in pharmacies are expensive. Don't forget good quality suncream and lip salve.
  • ADDITIONAL - trekking poles, books or kindle (the huts normally have many to read also), headtorch, map, sunglasses which are high UV rating and suitable for mountain conditions. 

Hut arrangements - the huts have dormitories with mattresses, pillows and duvets but some people like to bring their own lightweight liner for sleeping in, which can be made of cotton or silk. The huts also have wash rooms and in most cases showers. Rules are strict in the huts, including wearing of hut shoes and keeping noise down when people are asleep. Meals have strict serving times and there is generally a buffet of a choice of meals available. There is a bar where you can buy drinks. Every hut has a changing area at the entrance where you can leave boots, poles, climbing kit and bags.

Staff Review

This is a brilliant trek and far better for using the high altitude paths and the higher huts. It does involve carrying rucksacks but we organise a clothing change half way.
