When most people think of Kenya, they picture a sprawling savannah stuffed to the brim with zebra and lions. However, Kenya is surprisingly diverse. Mombasa, Kenya’s second largest city is much easier to navigate than the mighty Nairobi. Although much of the city itself seems to be falling apart, just off the coast life flourishes. For the best marine national parks try to dive or snorkel around Watamu and Malindi or the island of Wasini. The coastal island that stretch northwards are well wort a visit. Beaches and marine life aside, these islands also house archeological ruins of all kinds. There are mosques forts and tombs to be discovered. If wandering around in this region, do take care to dress conservatively, as the coast is predominately Muslim.
An overlooked area by travelers is Western Kenya. Boarding the mighty Lake Victoria, this region of Kenya is covered with lush jungle greenery. Rolling green hills give way to dense pockets of jungle in this agricultural hub. One can spend days discovering the fantastic scenery and people without coming across a single tourist. Spend some time in the laid back town of Ksumu along the coast of Lake Victoria. Originally built along a train line, this town is a start contrast to the busy hubs of Niarobi and Mombasa.
