Mount Elbrus Accommodation
In the Elbrus region we stay in a local Hotel called Nakra in Cheget with twin rooms, showers and a cafe. Generally we can eat either in the hotel or other local cafes which often offer better variations for a menu.
All food and accommodation is included in the total cost of the trip, so you can order as much as you like. The rooms are all twin rooms and in the lower floor is a sauna suite with plunge pool.
Cheget is a village just quarter of a mile from Terskol so there is plenty of chance to go for walks by yourself. From here we will take acclimatisation hikes up to Cheget Mountain and surrounding Alpine walking peaks. For this you will only need a daysack with food and a few clothes.
It is easy to sleep in the lodges or huts on the way up mount elbrus. We now use a new hotel at New Vista for our first night which is very comfortable and next to the cable car station. At the end of the last chair lift is the famous Bochka Camp, large comfortable 'barrels' ( they look like converted oil tankers), with six beds in each. They have heating inside and there is a seperate kitchen which is also warm. Bochka is quite busy at times and has great views of the mountain.
Priut Hut is only a few hundred metres higher than Bochka and has dormitory-style accommodation with tables and a cooker downstairs for preparing food. Upstairs are large shelves with many mattresses covering them for sleeping on. It can get very warm up there, so no need to worry about heavy duty sleeping bags. We use a snow machine to carry bags up. Here there is a good communal atmosphere and you are likely to meet people from many different countries. From here we spend some days working with ice axes and crampons alongside acclimatising for summit day.
Mount Elbrus Food
The food is all Russian local or Georgian, extremely tasty and plentiful. In the hotel and cafes you can sample traditional soups and stews like Borsch (meat or vegetable) or Salyanka, home made breads or hichiny (cheese bread), salads, and delicacies such as shashlyk (skewered lamb roasted on a charcoal fire), fried sturgeon, bliny (pancakes made with different fillings), fruit and vegetables. It is very wholesome and accompanied of course with vodka, local Georgian wines, beer or soft drinks.
On the mountain we have our own cook who will be a real smorgasbord of food for you and it is all delicious. Cheeses, meats, biscuits, breads, cereals, fruits, great Russian soups, rice and pasta dishes, fresh vegetables and stews.
