Gap Year Nepal

Gap Year Nepal offers people who are keen to undertake some volunteering abroad in a measured and safe environment. All of our Gap Year programs give you independence and a strong network of support from our many staff. You have your own house to call home and a fantastic team of people to help you settle into your new role.

All of the work you undertake is qualified by our charity trustees and the local community. This is a REAL Gap Year which, no matter what format you choose, will make a real and lasting difference! Below is an overview of our most popular volunteering projects in Nepal. Do drop us an email or give us a call for full information and availability on volunteering abroad.

‘Teaching in Kathmandu’
8 weeks Teaching, or 10 weeks with Optional Trek to Mt Everest

Moving Mountains and Adventure Alternative have been supporting and working with many projects in Nepal over the last decade. This Gap or sabbatical in Nepal concentrates on a particular school which we support and place children which the charity sponsors. It also introduces you to an organisation called SETU, which again is supported by Moving Mountains. SETU rehabilitates mothers once they have served time, often wrongly, in one of Nepal’s prisons. This is an emotional and very rewarding trip.

  • Teach English, computer skills, basic science and core subjects to primary school children in the boarding school where Moving Mountains sponsors children
  • Live locally and independently in a house in Kathmandu with plenty of staff and support
  • Visit temples and places of significant interest at the weekends or go hiking in the Kathmandu Valley
  • Get involved with SETU at the weekend
  • Optional trek to Base Camp of Mount Everest (2 weeks in total)

‘Project Himalaya – Model Green Village’
2 months rural development in the Himalayas and Everest Base Camp Trek

Over the last five years we have been implementing an essential project in one of the rural villages in the Himalayan range. Bumburi is now established as a Model Green Village however our work continues to develop the project and make the most out of it. This Gap involves your input to the continuing success of the project and will give you a real insight into a world and way of life, which time forgot.

  • Learn about alternative energy sources at our consultancy firm in Kathmandu
  • Trek in the lower Solu Khumbu to reach the idyllic village of Bumburi which has become a model green village with the support of Moving Mountains (1 week)
  • Spend time in Bumburi helping out with the continuing work on our hydro-electric programme and end use businesses eg tea production, laying paths, repairing water tanks (3 weeks)
  • Help out in the small school teaching children basic English and teaching basic IT at our telecentre
  • Visit our monastery in Bupsa, built by Moving Mountains
